JANUARY 2009

CHAIRMAN

~ SUZI OLSEN ~

Happy New Year!  It’s all about change for the coming year and LCOM is hopping on the bandwagon! Because we want to make sure everyone takes the time to read what’s going on in our busy LCOM lives, you’ll see a slimmed down version of our monthly newsletter.  Some of the “fun facts” info will only be posted on the bulletin board rather than duplicated here as well.  But not to worry, anything you need to know will be available as usual.

We gathered for a festive annual joint board meeting at Tannin’s a couple of weeks ago and as part of regular business, took a look at ’08 in review and wow. We did accomplish a lot! We also all reevaluated our goals for ’09 and we are definitely off to a great start! We welcome any suggestions from you as well.... remember my Squawk Box is always available for ideas! I was presented with a beautiful silver charm bracelet and also will be receiving a personalized photo album from 2008. Thank you! You’re the best!

I look forward to seeing you at the Jan 8th meeting when we kick off the New Year. Only with your support can we continue to be the best we can be!  Suzi

RULES

~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~

Rules Scenario That Often Confounds:

The Rules Department at the USGA fields approximately 20,000 questions annually. Though some are unusual situations, many of the questions relate to Rules 24-28. A basic familiarity with these Rules can go a long way toward helping us navigate our way around the course without confusion or delay.

One of the most frequently asked questions relates to when one player's ball is in a position on the putting green where it would assist a second player making a stroke off the putting green. What's the proper procedure? And does that procedure differ when it applies to partners in match play from when the players involved are competing in stroke play?

Following is the scenario that USGA Rules Officials use to explain the proper procedure when Rule 22-1 comes into play:

Players A and B are partners and Players C and D are partners in the same group in a competition. Player B's ball is in a position on the putting green where it would assist Player A who is making a stroke from off of the putting green. Is player B permitted to leave his ball on the putting green to assist Player A? Yes, Play B may leave his ball on the putting green; however Rule 22-1 states that except when a ball is in motion, if a player considers that a ball might assist any other player, he may (a) lift the ball if it is his ball, or (b) have any other ball lifted. Player C or Player D could require Player B to mark the position of and lift his ball if either player believes Player B's ball could assist Player A. In match play, there would be no penalty if Players C and D elected not to have Player B lift his ball. However, in stroke play, as Player C and D have an obligation to protect the field, they could be subject to disqualification if the Committee in charge of the competition believes they have intentionally allowed Player B's ball to be left on the green to assist Player A.

If Player B refused to lift his ball when requested to do so, he would be disqualified from the hole in match play and Player A would also be disqualified from the hole if Player B's ball did assist Player A. If Player B refused to lift his ball in stroke play, both Players A and B would be disqualified from the competition (Rules 3-4 and 31-7a).

LIBRARY NOTES

~ Marie DiDonato ~

I would like to thank all of you who shared books with the rest of us during 2008.  We hope that this will continue during the New Year.  Recently, we received a donation of two VCR Movies so I'm requesting  - either VCR's or DVD's - of movies you no longer want. Thanks for sharing!
