CHAIRMAN

~ SUZI OLSEN ~

It absolutely baffles my mind that just about a year has passed since I was installed as Chairman of the Ladies Club. For the most part, it has been a pretty seamless year, and I have you, the incredible, supportive Ladies Club and the extraordinary chairmen who served on the Board to thank.  Nothing “just happens”... long hours of planning, endless emails, and marathon meetings all contributed and added up to what has been an outstanding year. Thanksgiving is just a few days away; I am reminded that I have much to be thankful for and many to thank.  Bear with me if this gets lengthy, but some things simply must be said!

P.K. Jenican...along with your regular duties of VP in charge of Membership, thanks for revitalizing our Big Sister/Little Sister program!  Your pep and vitality added just the spark needed to make this a program so successful!

Sheryl Sauer: I knew I could always count on you to keep me up to date!  No one can top you when it comes to details! You did an amazing job keeping the minutes and your beautifully written cards were so appreciated.

Joey Knudson:  My right hand man! So efficient... so smart.... so much fun! The budget took on a life of its own; you made finances make sense and reminded all of us what a bargain it is to be a part of the Ladies Club!!

Patty Collins and Jill Blurton-Jones:  Two “pretty heads” are definitely better than one! Major Tournaments are always a challenge, but between the two of you, we had such a successful year!  As I said earlier, nothing “just happens” and your experience and attention to detail made the difference.

Judy Davis:  Where would we be without you?  You “jumped right in” and immediately your positive impact was felt.  Even the new “Foretees” could not hold you back!  Thanks for your tireless efforts in making the jobs of our Playday hostess easier and easier!

Rona Kipper:  You have conquered the learning curve!  Handicap is such an on-going process and one that you have handled with patience and diligence.  Your quiet presence and infectious giggle was just what I needed!

Dani Ratkelis: Experience says it all...our Guest Days were so well received and well run!  Once more, attention to detail made the difference!  Thanks for putting our best foot forward! You’re the best!

Georgianna Hales:  Rules can be tedious and seem totally nonsensical at times when it comes to golf!  Your sense of ethics and wanting to do the right thing for all of us has kept us on the right track!  I tip my hat to you...sometimes it isn’t easy to be the “enforcer”!!

Katherine Szem:  What a job you have done!  Our 9-holers have thrived under your tutelage.  We are so thrilled to see so many graduates enter the scary world of the18 holers!  Thanks for showing them they have nothing to fear...but the actual game of golf itself!!

Thought not technically a member of the Board, I simply cannot exclude my Parliamentarian Marie Di Donato from my Thanksgiving List.  Frankly, I feel a little guilty because all I had to do was e-mail my questions and concerns, and immediately I had deliberate, thoughtful, in-depth answers!  Boy, were you ever a time saver!  And to Tina Russell ... the Newsletter editor extraordinaire...Bravo!!! (Sorry there will be no encore!)

Once again I want to thank all of you for your encouragement and kind words of support this past year.  It is because of you, that I once again look forward to the coming year serving as chairman.  Besides that, we have sooooo much fun at our Board meetings!

I hope you are surrounded this holiday season with the blessings of good health, good friends, and the warmth of your family.   Suzi.

P.S.Don’t forget to sign up for the Dec 4th Gen Mtg when 2009 officers are sworn in!

HANDICAPS
~ RONA KIPPER ~

Ladies…as most of you know we have experienced a computer problem this past month.  In order to keep you all up to date and happy I have been inputting your data from my home computer.  This has been a task!!  We Marbella Ladies play a lot of golf!

·        As a favor I insist that you mark the tees you have played from.  If not it will be posted as Red Tees and will not be changed.

·        For every one of you who did not put your WSCGA Number on your card it took me a lot of time to look you up to post!  The same goes for all of you that put the wrong WSCGA Number in…

·        The date is also important!  When the Presidents’ Cup and other Tournaments come up and I have to look back to see if you qualify and your dates are missing or wrong who will be at fault?

Shelley Lawrence will be my Co-Chairman next year.  I look forward to working with her.  I will also be looking for a committee to help out at times during the year.   Anyone interested please let me know.

At our January General Meeting I will be announcing the “Most Improved Player for 2008”!  Who will it be?

RULES
~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~

Rule 22-1: Ball Assisting Play

The Rules Department at the USGA fields approximately 20,000 Rules questions annually. One of the most frequently asked questions relates to when one player's ball is in a position on the putting green where it would assist a second player making a stroke from off the putting green. What's the proper procedure? And does that procedure differ when it applies to partners in match play from when the players involved are competing in stroke play?

Following is the scenario that USGA Rules Officials use to explain the proper procedure when Rule 22-1 comes into play. Players A and B are partners and Players C and D are partners in the same group in competition. Player B's ball is in a position on the putting green where it would assist Player A who is making a stroke from off the putting green. Player A would like to have Player B's ball left on the putting green. Is Player B permitted to leave his ball on the putting green to assist Player A?

Yes, Player B may leave his ball on the putting green; however Rule 22-1 states that except when a ball is in motion, if a player considers that a ball might assist any other player, he may (a) lift the ball if it is his ball, or (b) have any other ball lifted.

Player C or Player D could require Player B to mark the position of and lift his ball if either player believes Player B's ball would assist Player A. In match play, there would be no penalty if Players C and D elected not to have Player B lift his ball However, in stroke play, as Players C and D have an obligation to protect the field, they could be subject to disqualification if the Committee in charge of the competition believes they intentionally allowed Player B's ball to be left on the green to assist Player A.

If Player B refused to lift his ball when requested to do so, he would be disqualified from the hole in match play and Player A would also be disqualified from the hole if Player B's ball did assist Player A. If Player B refused to lift his ball in stroke play, both Player A and Player B would be disqualified from competition (Rules 3-4 and 31-7a).

NINE HOLERS
~ KATHERINE SZEM ~

As we close out 2008, we have wonderful news from the 9-Holers.  Carol Grisanti has graduated to the 18-Holers Group and Linda Danto played her first General Meeting Day with the 18-Holers in November.  We also have a new 9-Holer, Rose Petritz, and welcome back Sandy Ewing and Paula Staff to our group.  Barbara Gray and Robert Chacon played in the Couples’ Member/Member with Caroline and Dave Dash and had a wonderful time.  So our 9-Holers are stepping right in and enjoying the fun.

I’ll be transitioning over my role as 9-Hole Chairman to our newly elected Chairman, Barbara Behrens, and her assistant, Mary Kay Minner.  So the 9-holers are in good hands for 2009.  It has been my privilege to serve our Ladies’ Club with our 9-Hole Group.  The excitement and warmth from our 9-Hole Ladies is simply wonderful to experience and treasure.  No matter what was going on in my life, Tuesday mornings were always a delight and re-energizing.  So thank you for allowing me to serve.

Warm regards and Happy Holidays to all!
