We need each and every one of you to insure a successful event.  Please support our biggest and best event of the year!

I’ll see you at the November 6th General Meeting when we will be voting on our new slate of officers for 2009 as well as Bylaw changes.  Until then...  take care and stay well for the upcoming holidays!!   Suzi

~ PLAYDAYS ~
JUDY DAVIS & KATHY LYONS

Great job October hostesses!!!  Not only did Joey Knudson, Carol Warlick and Yours Truly serve as hostesses for October, I was the lucky winner of the most beautiful necklace.  I am so delighted and will cherish it forever.  Our hostesses for November are Connie Merlis, Kay Wood and Jaisoo Bahng.  We are all “keeping our feet wet” on the course and our greens and fairways are very pristine…hit ‘um straight…you do NOT want to be in the rough right now.

WE STILL NEED HOSTESS VOLUNTEERS FOR NEXT YEAR.  WE CANNOT HAVE PLAY DAYS OR GENERAL MEETINGS WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT.  THE HOSTESS SIGN UP SHEET IS NEXT TO THE COMPUTER IN THE LOCKER ROOM.  I WILL BE AVAILABLE TO HELP ANY AND ALL HOSTESSES. I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO COME TO YOUR PLANNING MEETINGS AND GIVE ANY GUIDANCE YOU MAY NEED.

RALLY FOR THE CURE

GOLF TOURNAMENT

~ Jill Blurton-Jones ~

Marbella's "Rally for the Cure" was a tremendous success. We raised $6440. The average for Rally events in 2007 was $2515, so we more than doubled our donation. We had 59 ladies playing golf and about 66 ladies for a splendid lunch prepared by Chef Paul and his staff!

Thank you, thank you, girls! We just received a Certificate of Appreciation from Susan G. Komen for the Cure thanking us for our “commitment, passion, support, enthusiasm, and imagination… words that describe you, the individuals who are making a difference every day in the fight against breast cancer by being a part of the program. YOU make it happen, and we thank you so much for your continued support."

I would also like to thank all the hard work of my committee: P.K. Jenican, Patty Collins, Dani Ratkelis, Georgianna Hales, Joey Knudson, Tina Russell, Sally Orgera & Judy Davis...who was the lucky raffle winner of the diamond pendant necklace! Hats off to P.K. for her persuasive talents in securing the very generous donation from Nuggets & Carats. Our thanks to all our sponsors for helping us with our fundraising efforts.

The results of the tournament are as follows:

1st Place Gross Marquis, Lyons, Woodhouse, Sower 162
2nd Place Gross Jordan, Jenican, Sauer, McGlothin 164
3rd Place Gross North, Barry, M. Smith, Barger 167
1st Place Net Martensen, Tall, Szem, Minner 126
2nd Place Net S.Taylor, Orgera, Knudson, Cunningham 127
3rd Place Net J.Kim, Stringer, Russell, Lawrence 128

LADIES FALL GETAWAY

The Links of Summerly

~ Sherri Romito ~
The October 7th Getaway was a great success!  We took the bus to the course in South Lake Elsinore.  The staff was great, the golf course was a lot of fun and the food was delicious.  Returning to Marbella was relaxing because we could drink and socialize and leave the driving to Ken, our bus driver.

Linda Travis & Lisa Shaw were the first place gross winners of our competition which was the better ball of partners.  They had a score of 82.  Katherine Szem and Dorothy Matsuba won the first place net with a score of 66.

Because we had a few extra players, we ended up with an extra $62.  Rather than return $2.38 to each person, it is my recommendation that we donate that $62 to the Giving Tree this year.  If anyone has a problem with that please let me know and I will give you your money back.

Pictures for the event are posted in the locker room.

RULES
~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~

RULES

PROVISIONAL BALL
If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds,  to save time the player may play another ball provisionally in  accordance with Rule 27-1.  The player must inform his opponent in  match play or his marker or a fellow competitor in stroke play that  he intends to play a provisional ball, and he must play it before he or his partner goes forward to search for the original ball.

The player may play a provisional ball until he reaches the place  where the original ball is likely to be.  If he makes a stroke with  the provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely  to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place, the original  ball is lost and the provisional ball becomes the ball in play under  penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1)

If the original ball is neither lost nor out of bounds, the player
must abandon the provisional ball and continue playing the original  ball.  If he makes any further strokes at the provisional ball, he is  playing a wrong ball and the provisions of Rule 15-3 apply.

NINE HOLERS
~ KATHERINE SZEM ~

Welcome to Sandy Ewing, our newest 9-holer.  Sandy joined a very large group this last Tuesday for a wonderful time playing golf and discussing what happens when an "outside agency" does something with the ball.  As a reminder to all of us, when an "outside agency" moves the ball, the player plays the ball where it ends up.  So if it is inbounds, then it is in play.

Laura Ristoff had an experience on Hole #2 where she thought she had hit it out of bounds to the right.  However, one of the groundskeepers had thrown her ball back inbounds.  She did not know that she could have played the ball where it had ended up "inbounds".  She was so glad to learn that in the future, if this happens again, she'll be able to take advantage of the rule.

We are coming up to the time of year when the holidays are fast approaching and the calendar year is coming to an end.  We plan to have a "Graduation" celebration with husbands invited to honor all the 9-holers that have graduated during 2008.  We've had a very good year and we have made great progress.  Our graduation celebration will be held sometime in January or early February.  So be on the lookout for my e-mail requesting your input so that we can set the date.  We are anxiously awaiting the return of Paula Staff coming back to San Juan Capistrano from New York.  I think we'll be having another graduate before the end of the year.  Maybe by November 1st. I'll announce it as soon as I know.

LIBRARY NOTES
~ MARIE DI DONATO ~

I wanted you all to know how I handle the Library books.  When a book first comes to our library, I date it.  Each time a book comes back to the Library after being borrowed, it gets another date and so on each time it is borrowed.  With this simple system, it is easy to tell if a book is popular and has been borrowed many times or if there has been no interest in it at all..

When we receive more books than our shelves can hold, I remove all the books that have not been borrowed for months.  These books are then placed in plain view on the table with a note saying they are available for the taking, but are not to be returned to our library because of lack of interest.  Books remaining on the table after a couple of weeks are donated to the San Juan Capistrano Public Library.

"OFF THE COURSE"
BUT FOR THE RECORD
After overhearing a RECORD number of comments and requests for the SALAD COURSE served at the Rally for the Cure luncheon, Joey Knudson consented to share her recipe...
