OCTOBER 2008

I suppose summer is officially over now that October is around the corner, even though we are still enjoying wonderfully warm days and evenings!  I think you’ll all agree that Matt Marsh and his hardworking crew has provided us with extraordinary greens and beautiful fairways (dare I say even lush in many areas?) for the last several months.  Except for some bumpy rough (where I ‘m not supposed to be anyway), I certainly can’t blame my errant shots on course conditions!  So enjoy this last week or so of perfect golf because as you all know, October brings two (2) weeks of course closure.  From Oct 6-17th, overseeding will take place and we will be feeling the aftereffects for some time.

I hope you have all signed up for our Oct.2nd General Meeting. when we host “The Rally for the Cure” charity tournament.  Jill and her committee have been working overtime to make it a success.

October 7th is our One Day Getaway to Lake Summerly.  This needs additional support, so sign up in the locker room on the Wait List or call Sherrie Romito for further details.

The rest of October will be a kick back month for LCOM.  Please note that the WSCGA Tournament, originally scheduled to begin on Oct 30th has been cancelled this year (see Patty Collin’s article for details).

November, on the other hand, will come roaring in with much to accomplish.  At our Annual Meeting of the Membership (Nov. 6th), we will not only be voting on the proposed Bylaw changes (posted in Oct in the locker room), but on the new 2009 Slate of Officers as well!  (also posted in the locker room).  Many thanks to Bev Letter and her Nominating Committee for the hours of meetings and phone calls to produce a stellar slate of officers and coordinators.  Our most important event however, The Mission Belles will take place Nov. 19th and 20th.   Again, please see Patti Stringer’s article in this newsletter for details.

I would like to close by saying that it is extremely important to keep abreast of our LCOM happenings by reading the newsletter, attending General Meetings, and being watchful for locker room sign ups and bulletins.  All of your chairmen go to great lengths to keep you informed.  Please note that email blasts, designed to be used for emergency purposes only, will be kept at a minimum.

My continued thanks for the wonderful support you give to the ladies club to make us what we are.  In my opinion, we are the best around!!   See you on the 2nd.   Suzi

JUDY DAVIS & KATHY LYONS

Many thanks to our September hostesses, Carolyn McGuire, Charlene Salmacia and Joan Hartl.  Our hostesses for October are Joey Knudson, Carol Warlick and Judy Davis.

The September General Meeting Day had a little hitch in its get-a-long.  Due to last minute cancellations and additions in threesomes and in one case a foursome, the teams for the “Game of the Day” were not appropriately balanced.  No ghost was chosen for those teams with three players and they were not directed to play two balls.  The allocated prize money will be equally divided between the thirteen players that participated in the General Meeting Game.

GRAND RAFFLE PRIZE

The Mission Belles
~ Patti Stringer ~

It is that time of year again for LCOM's premier event, The Mission Belles.  Mark your calendar for November 19 and 20 and invite your favorite guest.  This is just a two day event, but there is a lot of fun packed into these two days.  You may also want to mark your calendar for the "just in case" rain date scheduled for Dec 3 and 4.  The Mission Belles poster, sign up sheet, and entry forms are located in the ladies locker room. Don't miss out on the fabulous event.

As in years past, we will have great raffle prizes. If you have any new items that you do not want, please contact one of the committee members:  Patti Stringer, Carol Warlick, Karen Jordan, Dorothy Matsuba, and Jeri Rimel.  We would love  any donations you may have.

RULES
~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~

Rule 20-3:  Placing and Replacing

A ball to be placed under the Rules must be placed by the player or his partner.  If a ball is to be replaced, the player, his partner,  or the person who lifted or moved it must place it on the spot from
which it was lifted or moved.  If the ball is placed or replaced by  any other person and the error is not corrected as provided in Rule  20-6, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke.  In any such case,  the player is responsible for any breach of the Rules that occurs as  a result of the placing or replacing of the ball.

If a ball or ball marker is accidently moved in the process of  placing or replacing the ball, the ball or ball-marker must be  replaced.  there is no penalty provided th movement of the ball or  ball marker is directly attributable to the specific act of placing
or replacing the ball or removing the ball marker.  Otherwise the  player incurs a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a or 20-1.

If a ball to be replaced is placed other than on the spot from which  it was lifted or moved and the error is not corrected as provided in  Rule 20-6, the player incurs the general penalty, loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play, for breach of the  applicable Rule.

NINE-HOLERS
~ KATHERINE SZEM ~
We have a lot of great news for this month.  Linda Danto just graduated from the 9-holers to the 18-Holers.  Congratulations, Linda!   We also have a new 9-holer, Barbara Gray.  Barbara joined the 9-holers for a couple of Tuesday Play Days in September and found a great match for herself in learning how to play golf and enjoy the experience.  Debby Sowers replaced me for a couple of Tuesdays because of my Fall Team commitments.  Thank you Debby. You are fabulous!   We have a lot of 9-holers participating in "Rally for a Cure": Carol Grisanti, Diane Combs, Elizabeth Thiergartner, Suzanne Grayson, Nancy Vanderwall, Judy Akin Palmer and Barbara Gray.  We are planning another 9-holer Couple's event so that we can add more fun and frivolity to our rounds of golf.  The husband's enjoyed our last Couples' event so much; we figured we might as well include them again in our festivities.  So spread the word about our 9-Hole Group.  Give out my telephone number (949-248-1456) or e-mail (kszem@earthlink.net).

FALL TEAM
~ Maria Barger & Patrish Stites ~

Marbella hosted the Orange County Fall Team Ocean Division on September 5, 2008. It was a wonderful day thanks to Robin and his staff, Ray Felix and his staff, our chef and Lisa Webster. These ladies could not have found their way around our course without the help of Barbara  Behrens, Judy Davis, Marie Di Donato, Carolyn McGuire, Sherri Romito, Katherine Szem, and Patricia Stites. Thank you all. A special thanks goes to Georgianna and Suzi!

Our season has come to a close. We had our last match of the season on September 23rd at Sea Cliff. Our last event of the season will be our party. Barbara Behrens has graciously offered the use of her lovely home in the Hunt Club. It will be a wonderful ending to a season full of fun and laughs.

We have many memories of our practice rounds, our matches and meeting golfers from other club. We are a dedicated team for sure. Our team is most grateful to Toni Nagel and Miki Hayama who arrived at Coto de Caza wrapped in bandages but willing to take one for the team! That’s what it means to be a Marbella  Fall Team Bunny. We can hold our heads (and our ears) high!
