NINE-HOLERS
~ KATHERINE SZEM ~

Congratulations to Ute McGlothlin and Judy Akin Palmer, our two newest graduates from the 9-Holers!!  When you see them, please congratulate them on their accomplishment.

We are planning to hold a 9-holer plus Spouse/Partner Sunday golf & dinner outing in August.  I'll be sending out an e-mail locking in the date and the arrangements.  This should be so fun, so plan to join us.

I wish to thank Debby Sowers for taking care of our 9-Holers on June 15.  We so appreciate her generosity.  Our 9-holers consider themselves lucky to be getting the guidance and support to improve their game and their overall experience.  We're looking forward to our next clinic on July 10.  Please
help spread the word and pass on to any lady interested in learning to play golf my phone number, 949-248-1456 or my e-mail,
kszem@earthlink.net.

RULES
~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~

A little history of stroke play for our readers:

Match play came first to golf, but by the mid-18th century, when golf clubs were being formed in Scotland their members wanted a form of competition where all the strokes taken to play a course would be counted, On May 9, 1759, the Society of St. Andrews resolved..."whoever puts in the Ball at the fewest Strokes Over the Field, being 22 holes, Shall be Declared the Sustained Victor."  The
victor was often awarded a medal from which the term "medal play” finds its origin.
During stroke play a few things, which had been decided by loss of hole in match play, needed more precise direction.  These Rules remain today. For instance, all balls must be holed out in stroke play.  Without such a stipulation, a player's round is incomplete and the score incomparable to those who have holed out.  The player now, as then, is disqualified if he does not hole out, because he has not completed the course.
To ensure that everyone plays the same course, tee markers take on an added importance in stroke play.  Beginning a hole from outside the markers results in a two-stroke penalty and a ball must be played from within their boundaries.  Just as all players must end in the same place, they must begin in the same place.  Failure to correct an
error of this type also results in disqualification.
Another important distinction is the method used when doubt arises about how to proceed.  Rule 3-3 allows those competing in stroke play to play a second ball.  The player must announce ahead of time his intent to play a second ball and which ball he wishes to use should
the Rules allow it.
Because the total number of strokes determines the winner in stroke play, the scorecard becomes each player's testament to what he has accomplished on the course, and a marker must attest it.  Errors in scorekeeping cannot be tolerated when the best score is what determines the winner.  A score for a hole that is higher than actually taken can be included because it would not create an advantage, but a lower score must result in disqualification because
it would create one.
The responsibility for violations in both forms of play rests with the players themselves.  While there are 15 one-stroke penalties that apply to both forms of play, the general penalty in stroke play is two strokes and play continues while in match play it is loss of hole.  However, a stroke play violation that results in a serious inequity between a player's procedure and that of the entire field
must logically result in disqualification.

FALL TEAM
~ Maria Barger & Patrish Stites ~

The bunnies are off! Our first practice is Tuesday, July 1, with a full roster. We practice at Marbella on the following three Tuesdays also. Many of the ladies have already ordered their team shirts long before the deadline of June 30, 2008.

We are ready for Match Play! We pledge to be as quick as a bunny and play ready golf to the green and honors on the green. Our bunny brains will score one point for a gross and net win, no points for a loss, and ½ point for a gross and net tie.

Patrish & Maria remind their team,

NEWSLETTER
~ TINA RUSSELL ~

A special thanks to all those submitting articles for the newsletter before the 25th so I could leave town. I commend those of you for reading the newsletter from beginning to end.I apologize for my spelling error on the last LCOM Blast.  As a former teacher, I thought of a way to see how many of you really do read your whole assignment. This simple test should do the trick. Next time you see our Chairman, why not ask her if she made the putt??? I hope I'll be around for the next release.
