CHAIRMAN
~ SUZI OLSEN ~
Our “Spring Getaway” last month was such a huge success thanks to coordinators Sherri Romito and LaVaughan Gilkey
and committee helpers Judy Davis, Carol McLaughlin, and Rona Kipper. They did
such a great job organizing the cocktail party, golf, and dinner! Quite a feat for 30+ women!
It was especially nice to see so many ladies participate, especially some whom we haven’t seen in a long time! I am now holding these excellent party planners to organizing the next one in the
fall!!
We seem to be on cruise control this month. Here’s what to look forward to:
*At our May 1st General Meeting, we will be privileged to have course superintendent Matt Marsh as a guest. Matt is anxious
to bring us up to date on course conditions and what we can expect
for the next several months. Linda K. will be once more
tempting us with another fabulous Raffle; the winning ticket may just be yours!
*May 15th brings
us another Guest Day headed by Toni Nagel. “May Flowers” is the theme
for what we know will be a successful day.
*Spring Team is now underway
and off to a successful start! Way to go Marbella!
As May weather turns even more
beautiful and the course becomes a little more golfer friendly, many of us may want to tune up our game with lessons from
one of our excellent pros. Comedienne Phyllis Diller puts that all into perspective
with this great quote! “The reason the pro tells you to keep your head down is so you can’t see him laughing.” With that in mind, I wish you lots of birdies and pars, but most of all a relaxing
time out there with good golfing friends! Suzi

NINE-HOLERS
~ KATHERINE SZEM ~
Our 9-Holers Group is going
strong. Each week we have 6-8 ladies playing, learning the rules and having a
wonderful time. Every clinic, we have 8-12 ladies working with our Professional Golf Staff to improve our technique. It must be working because last Tuesday we had 3 players with scores in the 50’s
and three players with scores in the 60’s. It wasn’t too long ago
that most of our players had scores in the 70’s.
We
are also getting used to ForeTees and reserving our tee times. By the time we
graduate as 18-holers, we’ll be experts. Thank you to all the 18-Holers
helping us out, especially Maria DiDonato and Charlene Salmacia. We bade Paula
Staff a temporary “goodbye” as she moved back to her New York home. Paula
will be rejoining us in October.
Please
spread the word of our 9-Holer program. It is certainly a “user friendly”
way to break into golf and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded women. Please
call me at 949-248-1456 or e-mail me at kszem@earthlink.net.
BIG/LITTLE SISTER

~PK JENICAN
AND JOAN HARTL~
Marbella Ladies Club is starting a Big Sister program to assist the women who are moving up to the 18-hole group and leaving
the 9-hole group. This program will include One-on-One personal contact such as scheduling

of play” and generally answering all the questions the Little Sister may have. This sisterhood relationship will be based on a 12-month period. All the gals
are excited about taking part in this program to meet new friends and help all of our ladies be the best they can become!
The Ladies enrolled in the program thus far are:

CINCO DE MAYO

Those of you coming to the Cinco de Mayo Couples Member-Guest
on May 3rd are headed for a fabulous time. Check-in will start at 11:00 and you can have lunch early to allow plenty of time
for the Putting and Chipping Contests. The Shotgun is at 1:00. We would recommend bringing a sweater for the evening as we

SPRING TEAM
~ ALI NORTH & YOLANDA TALBOT
CO-CAPTAINS
Our
2008 spring team season is in full swing and we’re proud to say that we have done quite well in our first two matches
against Newport Beach Country Club, winning 3-1/2 out of 4 possible points! We
head to Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park next Thursday, May 8th, and then they will visit us on our home
course on Thursday, May 22nd. We will play a total of 8 matches between
now and June 12th and certainly have our work cut out for us so wish us luck!
GO
MARBELLA LADIES TEAM!!
FALL TEAM
~ Maria Barger & Patrish Stites ~
Just a reminder…The time is almost here
for our favorite Fall Team to begin. We would like all potential players (with a handicap between 15-30/August index),
to be watching for future information. We will do this by newsletter, General Meetings and locker room message board.
The actual play dates do not begin until August so we have lots of time to practice and be ready to play.
We’re looking forward to playing some different
courses, making new friends and just having a ridiculously good time while doing it! That is what Fall Team is all about
so check your August calendars and we will be back in touch.
RULES
~ GEORGIANNA HALES ~
Position On Raking A Similar Hazard
An
interpretation of Rule 13-4a effective immediately:with respect to testing the condition of a similar hazard (whether a bunker
or a water hazard). One such question was whether a player whose ball lies in a bunker may smooth sand to tidy up another
bunker, even though he had not made a stroke from that other bunker.
-
Rule 13-4a prohibits a player from testing the condition of
the hazard in which his ball lies or a similar hazard. Yet Exception 3 to the Rule, which was introduced in 2008, allows a
player to test the condition of one hazard after playing from that hazard into a similar hazard. Although Decision 13-4/0.5
lists smoothing a bunker with a rake, club or otherwise as an example of testing the condition of the hazard, the Etiquette
Section of the Rules of Golf provides that "Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all
holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others."
-
It
is not the intent of Rule 13-4a to prohibit players from practicing the proper etiquette of the game when more than one bunker
is involved. Therefore, when the player’s ball lies in a bunker, it would not be a breach of the Rules if the player
were to smooth the sand in another bunker, provided (a) the smoothing is for the purpose of tidying up the bunker, (b) the
smoothing does not breach Rule 13-2 (Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing, or Line of Play) with respect to his
next stroke and (c) there is not a reasonable possibility that the smoothing could affect a subsequent stroke by the player.
-
If
the player were to smooth sand in the bunker in which his ball lies prior to making his first stroke in that bunker, he would
be in breach of Rule 13-4a.
Questions
have arisen in connection with a recent ruling involving Stewart Cink at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. In that situation,
the player incurred a penalty for smoothing sand in a bunker from which he had not made a stroke, when his ball lay in another
bunker -- a ruling that followed the USGA’s Rules of Golf Committee’s position at that time. To avoid such an
act being a breach of the Rules in the future, the JRC has decided to make public its agreed position on smoothing a similar
hazard.
